How is the Guidepost Montessori approach different from conventional education?

At Guidepost, we join with parents on their mission to help their child grow and live well. Together, we design an education to empower each child to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence she needs to craft an independent, flourishing life.

Though there are many differences between the conventional approach and Guidepost, here are some of the most important:

Conventional Education vs Guidepost Montessori
What is the Guidepost Mission?

At Guidepost, our mission is to support each child in achieving her own independence. To do this, we help her gain the knowledge, build the skills, and craft the personal character she needs to flourish. Above all, our goal is to cultivate joy—in the pursuit of knowledge, in effort applied to work worth doing, in the achievements of herself and others, and in taking the steps to author her own life.

What are the outcomes of your programs?

Montessori education is known world-wide for having positive impacts on both academics and social and emotional skills.

At Guidepost Montessori, when we design an environment to meet the developmental needs and interests of children alongside personalized care and support, the child can learn advanced skills at an accelerated pace.

Our students, for example, regularly learn to read by the time they’re 4-years-old and can perform all four math operations with 4-digit numbers by the end of their Kindergarten year.

The language and math skills of our kindergartners are on a par with what children in conventional programs learn in 3rd grade or beyond! What’s more, our students learn advanced academics joyfully—while simultaneously developing deep focus, self-discipline, and positive social skills.

Do your programs include Kindergarten?

Yes! The third year of our Children’s House program, designed for 3- to 6-year-olds, is the capstone kindergarten year. In this year, the child has been well-prepared to experience an explosion of literacy, learn advanced math concepts, and use her hard-won ability to focus, problem-solve, and persist through challenges to then make advanced gains across the curriculum. Children who continue with Guidepost through Kindergarten are often well-ahead of their peers when they enter 1st grade.

Learn more about the next exciting stage: the Guidepost elementary program.

Following elementary, students continue on to our Montessori middle and high school, the Academy of Thought & Industry: a school that combines a classical liberal arts emphasis on history and great books, and a Montessori emphasis on independence and agency.

How does Guidepost partner with parents?

At Guidepost, we want to make the best education the best for children and parents. This is why we provide year-round, extended-day programming at no extra cost, enabling consistent and uninterrupted access to the care and developmental support parents expect. We invite you into your child’s world—with daily photo and video updates, regular milestone meetings, and parent-child events that showcase your child’s progress. We work to understand your unique context and needs, so that we can provide support for milestones at home as well as at school.

In everything we do, we strive to cultivate joy as you watch your child grow!

Children under the age of six absorb language effortlessly, which is why we are pleased to offer bilingual environments. In our Spanish Immersion program, children learn both Spanish and English literacy skills, however, the prevailing language spoken throughout the day is Spanish. The overall emphasis on Spanish rapidly increases fluency, as children feel naturally compelled to communicate with their Spanish-speaking guides. Learn more about our Spanish Immersion program here

Children come into our Children’s House classrooms between 2.5 and 3 years old. They are newly in control of their bodies, capable of a great deal, and eager to work. Their eyes grow wide at the amazing materials arrayed before them on shelf after shelf. They can’t wait for their Guide to start “presenting” those materials to them—a quiet, beautiful ritual where the Guide demonstrates a material to an individual child, and then offers it to the child to use. Each of those moments feels unique and inspiring. Children are eager to use the materials with purpose and reverence.

In Montessori settings, Cloth Washing is a structured activity that teaches children how to care for fabrics and garments.

This task includes everything from wetting and scrubbing clothes to rinsing, wringing, and hanging them to dry. It's designed to enhance both physical skills and cognitive understanding through a real-world task that children see adults doing regularly. 👚👖

🧼 Develops Fine Motor Skills: Handling clothes and manipulating washing tools help refine children's motor skills and hand strength.
🔄 Teaches Life Skills: Children learn essential self-care skills that are fundamental for independence.
🧠 Boosts Cognitive Skills: Following steps in the washing process enhances children's ability to sequence tasks and solve problems.
🕰️ Encourages Time Management: Managing the start-to-finish process of washing teaches time awareness and patience.
👚 Promotes Responsibility: Taking care of their own and others' belongings fosters a sense of responsibility and respect for property

At home, your child can participate in putting laundry in the household laundry basket when it is dirty, then putting it in the washing machine, adding soap, and turning on the machine. Your child can also help you to put clean clothes into the dryer, and fold them and put them away again.🧺

Many educators have come to recognize the power of the environment and even the classroom aesthetic in shaping the development of their students.
Montessori was an earlier pioneer and progenitor of this perspective on early experiences. As she put it: all children must create themselves, and they do so using the material they find in the world around them. 🌎

This is why good Montessori educators take tremendous care of the environments they design for their children. Every tool, every ornament, every piece of furniture is meticulously selected and arranged such that students are able to independently know it and access it. And more than that, it’s designed to instill in students a sense of reverence: that their everyday interactions with the world are purposeful and profound. The materials selected are beautiful, breakable, and precious, begging to be treated with care. ✨

Children are taught to take stewardship of their environment; they are taught this through continuous modeling by all of the adults in the school, who are trained to showcase their grace and respect.
The same principles apply to parents who are applying Montessori principles to their home environment: there’s a consciousness of an aesthetic and a simplicity, and an awareness of how to maximize the child’s independence in engaging with her world at home. 🏠

Children are born with limitless potential to grow, learn, and explore—to step-by-step build up their knowledge, hone their skills, and craft their character. The Montessori approach is based on a belief in the capability of children to do all the important, necessary work to realize that potential, as only they can.

With Montessori, we honor and support this work by offering children an endless set of meaningful choices and tools worthy of their effort. The goal is to observe children carefully, understand their needs, and then provide an environment that enables them to become increasingly independent—increasingly able to meet their own needs, form their own values, and author their own life.

The result of a Montessori education is children who grow by their own effort. Children who genuinely experience success independently. Children who are joyously earning confidence. Children who know that they can do real things and engage in real learning. The result is children who confidently seek their own understanding of the world, create a character they can be proud of, and direct their lives on their individual path to success, happiness, and flourishing.

For most adults, getting interrupted from our work means broken momentum. The rhythm of our work is disrupted. It’s hard to get back on track. If we’re concentrating deeply, absorbed in our work, the impact is even more significant. Our children experience the same obstacles when we interrupt their concentration, even when we do so because we are trying to be kind. Because children’s attention space may seem very short (or nonexistent!), it’s easy to forget that attention is a work in progress. Children’s ability to concentrate is a developing skill and, like all developing skills, requires the opportunity to practice in order to master. When children are engaged in interesting activities, they are simultaneously practicing their ability to remain engaged, to attend to other activities and to manage multiple stimuli without losing the capacity to concentrate on one. For parents, supporting children’s developing concentration means, first, giving them the opportunity to concentrate without interruption. When you notice that your child is paying attention to something, even for just a moment or two, try to wait until your child breaks his or her attention independently before interrupting. You can do this even with very small children. Infants will observe interesting visual stimuli, watching carefully and quietly. And remember: your example is as important as the opportunities you provide for your child. Model attentiveness for your child. Selectively multitask. Put your telephone away more often. Turn off the computer or television when you’re playing with your child. Make and keep eye contact during conversations with your child. Avoid calling to your child from across the room when he or she is already engaged in another activity. Slow down and be intentional in the ways you engage your child while thy are focused. Remember to let them focus unless they are damaging an item or causing a danger to themselves or others. . . . #montessori #education #katytx #katytexas #houston #earlychildhoodeducation #houstontx #preschool #montessoriearlylearning #toddler #childcare #development #concentração

The use of glass instead of plastic when it comes to dishes in Montessori may be somewhat of an enigma to those unfamiliar with Montessori or to those who are just starting to learn. There is solid reasoning behind the use of glass over plastic in the Montessori learning environment and at home, though. It's something called “control of error“. When children use glass dishes, they learn very quickly how to control their movements as not to break them. Using these controlled movements is beneficial to brain development. It also offers lessons in caring for fragile items. When you implement Montessori in your home, it's all about finding lessons in real-life activities. If your child breaks a dish, here are some teaching opportunities that you can take advantage of: ⭐️Safety around broken glass ⭐️How to properly clean and dispose of broken glass ⭐️How not cleaning the mess thoroughly could cause injury to themselves or someone else ⭐️That it's not a major disaster or something to feel guilty about when something glass breaks. We clean it up safely and move on with our lives. Would you be open to making the switch? What other questions do you have about using these materials? . . . #montessori #education #katytx #katytexas #houston #earlychildhoodeducation #houstontx #preschool #montessoriearlylearning #glass #plate #mealtime #routine #childdevelopment #childcare #explore

Practical life activities are applicable for all ages, even infants, and change depending on what the child can do at each stage of development. The activities can start with something as simple as pulling pants up or washing hands and can get as complicated as baking a dessert, or even developing a business plan in the elementary or middle school years. In doing practical life activities, the child can develop a high level of concentration, develop a sense of order, take pride in completing a job, increase independence, develop respect for his or her community and surroundings, and improve fine motor skills—both in general and with an eye to the particular skills that a child will need for more cognitively demanding work such as reading, writing, and mathematics. The practical life activities should be taken seriously as children are working diligently to perfect and master specific skills. This fundamental range of work has many layers of purpose that include joyously earning mastery over the "mundane," as well as constructing and practicing core human skills. . . . #montessori #education #katytx #katytexas #houston #earlychildhoodeducation #preschool #houstontx #montessoriearlylearning #houstontx #toddler #toddlermom #toddlerlife #toddleractivities #toddlermomlife

In conventional education, language and literacy curriculum is typically reserved for kindergarten and above. Though you may be able to read a book to a younger child or teach him the alphabet song, more advanced skills seemingly have to wait. A young child has only very recently learned to speak and understand others. The use of language, the expansion of vocabulary, and the translation of spoken language into concrete symbols are all very fascinating to him. Through the use of sensory-rich, hands-on materials, a child as young as 2.5 can begin building the foundations of literacy. In a Montessori Children’s House, a young child is given access to a language curriculum at his level, enabling him to build skills without rote drills and without requiring teacher-led lectures. In addition, all other areas of the curriculum and the presentation of activities themselves are designed to indirectly teach skills needed for language and literacy development. Most materials, for example, must be grasped by little knobs, requiring the child to practice the pincer grip he’ll later use when writing. Similarly, most materials and activities are organized such that a child must follow a right-to-left and top-to-bottom pattern, just like a child will later use when reading. Because the language curriculum is aligned with the child’s stage of development, and is designed to isolate skills that the child can focus on one at a time, he advances farther than his peers in traditional education. By the time the child reaches the end of the 3-year program, equivalent to finishing kindergarten year, he is able to read for comprehension and has studied advanced grammar that his peers won’t see until 2nd or 3rd grade. In the Montessori approach, it is important that children have the opportunity to be as independent as possible. Opportunity arises even when children try to put on a coat by themselves -- like with the Montessori coat flip. 🧥 Children as young as 18 months can try this method to dress independently. To guide your child through a coat flip, -Lay the coat flat on the ground and your child will stand by the hood or inside label. -Then they will put their hands in the sleeve holes, while lifting the jacket over their heads. - The coat will then slide down onto their body. Model this for your child with your own coat, and support them as they practice. Encourage them to keep trying, as they might get a bit frustrated through the learning process. This is normal! Make it fun, and show them you believe they are capable. Once they can do the flip, they will feel so proud of themselves and enjoy the new independence. Start to practice, and they will be ready for the next time a rainy, cold day comes around. Will you try this method? How does your child practice independence at home? 🏠 . . . #montessori #education #katytx #katytexas #houston #earlychildhoodeducation #houstontx #preschool #montessoriearlylearning #toddler #toddlerlife #toddlerstyle #toddlermom #toddlermomlife #toddleractivities #coatflip #cold #snow #snowday #rainyday #independence #childdevelopment #childcare

Over the past four years I have seen the dedication from not only the administration but also the Guides! The Montessori approach is something that not too many parents are familiar with but with the help of the certified guides, Guidepost Montessori at Katy has set the bar extremely high in what it means to teach authentic Montessori. The school has grown so fast and it has been great to witness from the outside of how determined the staff as remained to continue on the mission. The culture at Katy is not something you find every day. The families are not only friends with each other but also the staff has created a safe place for each other in and outside of the building.

We love Guidepost Katy! The staff are all so caring and dedicated to their students and the montessori education they provide. My daughters feel loved and welcomed by everyone they come across. Knowing that my girls are in a safe, clean environment with teachers that I trust was a huge factor of our decision to enroll them here. Our experience with the Toddler and infant programs have been wonderful and Im often told my 2 year old is so capable for her age. We have this school to thank!!

From the first moment, I learned and experienced the Montessori approach. I knew Guidepost Montessori of Katy was the place for my daughter and I. Her growth since starting here has been amazing. They offer such an outstanding educational experience in a nurturing environment. The dedication and passion of the staff members shine through at every interaction, making it evident that they prioritize the individual needs of each child. Which has allowed my daughter to thrive and develop at her own pace. I always feel a sense of trust and security knowing my daughter is in great hands.

I knew little to nothing about Montessori until I came here. The people working here were so inviting & always took the extra mile to make sure I understood the values of Montessori & the benefits of raising children this way to grow independence. I am constantly amazed to see not even 2 year old practice skill set that will aid them in their later years of life!

We have been part of the Guidepost Montessori community since our daughter was just 20 months old, and we are thrilled to see her now about to embark on the Elementary Program. From day one, the care and dedication of her guides have been exceptional. They have consistently provided a warm, empathetic, and professional environment that has allowed our daughter to flourish. Their ability to tailor her Montessori learning path to her unique needs has been instrumental in her growth and success. The Admin team has also been a highlight of our experience. Their commitment to making our family feel heard, understood, and welcomed has made a significant difference in our overall experience with the school. We feel incredibly grateful for the supportive and nurturing environment that Guidepost Montessori has provided. It has been a joy to see our daughter thrive, and we look forward to continuing this journey with the school. We highly recommend Guidepost Montessori to any family seeking a compassionate and effective Montessori education.

My daughter has attended Guidepost Montessori for a few months, and I have noticed a drastic improvement in her social and behavior skills. The teachers here are extremely supportive and have supplied an environment in which my child has been nurtured to develop critical thinking skills. She has been encouraged to become more creative and independent through the curriculum, as she works on many hands-on activities. Overall, I am very happy with the atmosphere Guidepost Montessori has provided for my daughter.

Guidepost Montessori at Katy is a wonderful school for my daughter. We are grateful every day that we found it. Our daughter happily heads to school each day and has blossomed under the care of the teachers and staff. Ms. Kyana, who runs the toddler classroom, is kind, clear, and has helped our daughter grow and develop in a very short period of time. We absolutely love Guidepost Montessori at Katy and would highly recommend the school to anyone looking for a genuine Montessori education from a group of fantastic teachers and administrators!

My son started in Picco and when he met Ms Adela and went in immediately for a hug and settled in as if he already been there before I knew we were safe and in the right place! She communicates so well and takes good care of my baby boy. My daughter is with Ms Archana in children’s house and is happy every time I come to pick her up. I am big on communication and the teachers here really do a good job of that so THANK YOU GUIDEPOST ❤️🔥

Enrolling our child in Guidepost has truly been a breath of fresh air. From our initial tour to transitioning our child from her previous school, the process was seamless. Upon my first visit, I was impressed by the cleanliness, the inviting atmosphere, the curriculum, and the dedicated teachers. Mrs. Kayce, the head of school, conducted my tour and her extensive knowledge about Montessori learning left a lasting impression. She provided additional resources for further exploration, which I appreciated. Having experienced our child attending a different school, I've noticed significant differences at Guidepost Montessori: the curriculum is tailored to my child, she receives personalized attention from her teachers, and the communication with us as parents is exceptional. We've witnessed a remarkable change in her development, confirming that choosing Guidepost Montessori was the right decision for our family.

We absolutely love it here! Our almost 3 year old has been attending since she was 4 months old and the teachers and administration have always been incredible. They frequently check in with us parents to discuss our child’s development and to review what they are working on in the classroom. When we found Guidepost, we had no experience with the Montessori method of education. We have learned alongside our daughter and they have equipped us with the skills to provide a consistent environment at home.

Enrolling our son in Guidepost Montessori at Katy has been one of the best decisions my husband and I have made. He attended a different school for roughly two months before we transitioned to Guidepost and it made the biggest difference! He is extremely happy to go to school everyday and even asks why we don’t go to school on the weekends too 😂. He has learned and grown SO much during these 4 months, and we’re excited to keep watching him thrive! Mrs. Kacey, Mrs. Michelle and every one of the guides are an awesome team and the reason Guidepost is the best school for our little ones . Thank you all! ❤️‍

Our family has had a wonderful experience with Guidepost Montessori in Katy. We enrolled our daughter last February when she was 5 months old and she joined the Nido program. We were happy to see she got comfortable with her guides and her classroom very quickly. We greatly appreciate the photos with detailed descriptions of what our daughter is doing at school and the daily written recap of all notable events, including what she ate and any exciting highlights from the day. Her guides have been fantastic and we value the love and care they show to our daughter.

I spent a long time searching, researching and touring schools for my son, looking for the best fit. I wanted him to experience Montessori, and I have to say I love what I am seeing with him. The things he comes home and talks about, as well as his improvement of social skills, warms my heart completely. I am very happy we found this school. Our son has been attending Guidepost for over a year now. The staff here is incredibly caring and dedicated. The learning environment is beautifully designed and promotes hands-on learning experiences. The communications with us have been great keeping us well informed about our child's progress. We couldn't be happier with the care and education provided by Guidepost. We can highly recommend it to anyone looking for a safe and healthy environment for you kids.

ever since we got pregnant, I knew I wanted a montessori education for my children. They develop skills and indepence that are key for who they are going to be as adults. I did a ton of research and found this to be the best school out there. Being able to bring my son to this school is like a dream come true for me. Just a little example, like any other child, my son went through an readaptation period when one of his teachers left the school. This was a very stressful and difficult time for all parties involved (my son, parents, new teacher, school staff). But throughout this process Miss Michelle was incredibly helpful and patient with us. That’s why this year we hope to be able to enroll our daughter in here aswell!
