what makes us stand out.

How is the Guidepost Montessori approach different from conventional education?.

At Guidepost, we join with parents on their mission to help their child grow and live well. Together, we design an education to empower each child to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence she needs to craft an independent, flourishing life.

Though there are many differences between the conventional approach and Guidepost, here are some of the most important:

Conventional Education vs Guidepost Montessori
What is the Guidepost Mission?.

At Guidepost, our mission is to support each child in achieving her own independence. To do this, we help her gain the knowledge, build the skills, and craft the personal character she needs to flourish. Above all, our goal is to cultivate joy—in the pursuit of knowledge, in effort applied to work worth doing, in the achievements of herself and others, and in taking the steps to author her own life.

What are the outcomes of your programs?.

Montessori education is known world-wide for having positive impacts on both academics and social and emotional skills.

At Guidepost Montessori, when we design an environment to meet the developmental needs and interests of children alongside personalized care and support, the child can learn advanced skills at an accelerated pace.

Our students, for example, regularly learn to read by the time they’re 4-years-old and can perform all four math operations with 4-digit numbers by the end of their Kindergarten year.

The language and math skills of our kindergartners are on a par with what children in conventional programs learn in 3rd grade or beyond! What’s more, our students learn advanced academics joyfully—while simultaneously developing deep focus, self-discipline, and positive social skills.

Do your programs include Kindergarten?.

Yes! The third year of our Children’s House program, designed for 3- to 6-year-olds, is the capstone kindergarten year. In this year, the child has been well-prepared to experience an explosion of literacy, learn advanced math concepts, and use her hard-won ability to focus, problem-solve, and persist through challenges to then make advanced gains across the curriculum. Children who continue with Guidepost through Kindergarten are often well-ahead of their peers when they enter 1st grade.

Following elementary, students continue on to our Montessori middle and high school, the Academy of Thought & Industry: a school that combines a classical liberal arts emphasis on history and great books, and a Montessori emphasis on independence and agency.

How does Guidepost partner with parents?.

At Guidepost, we want to make the best education the best for children and parents. This is why we provide year-round, extended-day programming at no extra cost, enabling consistent and uninterrupted access to the care and developmental support parents expect. We invite you into your child’s world—with daily photo and video updates, regular milestone meetings, and parent-child events that showcase your child’s progress. We work to understand your unique context and needs, so that we can provide support for milestones at home as well as at school.

In everything we do, we strive to cultivate joy as you watch your child grow!

While temporarily living in New York, my children had the pleasure of attending Guidepost in Brooklyn Heights. My two boys enjoyed their time in the Children’s House. The transparent classroom is a different approach than other schools and we were able to follow our children’s weekly lessons and see great progress. Would definitely recommend. Thank you to all the wonderful guides, you’ll be missed!

We are very happy with our experience at Guidepost Montessori, Brooklyn Heights. The teachers and administration are all wonderful - they care deeply that all children are happy, learning, and getting what they need to thrive. They also teach kids that learning can be fun, how to independently explore, work within a group, and communicate respectfully to others. The school has done a wonderful job of communicating the individual updates for each child, but also what's going on in the school, how to get involved, and what's coming up for the families and kids. They spend recess outdoors in nearby parks, and offer after school care where they go outside again. The facility is on the smaller side, but it offers an intimate space for children to learn and grow in. We've had nothing but positive feelings since joining the Guidepost family. We are so happy we found it!

I cannot speak more highly of the teachers and staff at Guidepost Montessori at Brooklyn Heights, and of the school program as a whole. In the 6 months than our son has been a student in the Children's House program (3-6 year olds), he has grown in such amazing ways. He is more grounded, mature, curious, courageous, patient, respectful, and communicative. I am so proud of our son, and I am so grateful to everyone at the school. The teachers are kind, gifted, knowledgeable & dedicated. They are excellent at facilitating the students in dually independent & collaborative learning approach that Montessori schools are known for. Our son has developed genuine and meaningful connections to his teachers, both in the classroom & during after school. I can feel how much they really care about him and his development. And he just loves them all! The style of learning the school provides is just what our son needs. He has space to explore is own interests (everything!) and at his own pace (fast!) through the independent work cycles during each day. He has the opportunity to go outside everyday to the beautiful Brooklyn bridge park to explore nature with his classmates, which is an absolute must for him - as he definitely needs lots of space to run and he loves the natural world. My favorite part of the learning approach for our son's age-group, is that he is first learning lots of practice life styles to strengthen his focus, coordination, and process, before diving into more abstract subjects. It is serving as a great bridge for him. With simple but impactful activities like grinding coffee, juicing oranges, serving tea, watering plants, rolling and unrolling mats - he is firstly learning How To Learn. This has helped him so much to transition into the classroom environment with activities he already loves to do (like prep veggies and water plants). Also, one incredible perk of this school is that the teachers take photos of our son throughout each day (along with detailed descriptions of what activity or lesson he is working on, how this fits into his learning program, and how his is progressing) and they share them with us on a simple digital platform we access from home. I get to see multiple photos and descriptions of his lessons EVERYDAY - which is priceless. I know exactly what he's working on, so I can continue those activities at home, and I can have real conversations with him about his day b/c I have a window into what he's done. I am so grateful our son is at Guidepost Montessori, and I sincerely recommend the school to any parent looking for a safe, peaceful, enriching space for their child to grow. Thank you Guidepost at BK Heights!

We arrived at Guidepost after three years at a small Waldorf school and couldn't be more pleased with Guidepost Montessori BH. The school director, faculty, and staff are so wonderfully kind and supportive, we can see and feel them connecting deeply with both our children. The kids go out twice a day to a small field overlooking the waterfront. We look forward to teacher-parent conferences and reading school reports, which also show great sensitivity, kindness, and respect.

We were welcomed warmly into the Guidepost Montessori community after an unfortunate mishap with a previous school. The administration guided us with such clarity, grace and care that we knew immediately we had found a gem! My now 7 year old is often eager to get to school, make a plan for his work and equally eager to relay the days happenings at pick up. The classroom teachers are so detailed in their communication that I never feel left out or confused about what occurs in the classroom. Guidepost Montessori is somewhat of an ideal school! From it’s clear communication, attention to detail and overall happy students I have found an incredible school environment for my son for years to come!
