Dry Pouring is a Montessori Practical Life activity in which a child transfers a dry material from one container to another.
A tray might hold beans, rice, or another dry material and two or more small vessels. The child lifts one vessel and pours carefully into the next. If material spills, the child can see it and return the pieces to the tray.
Classrooms can offer several versions of the activity. A child may begin with larger pieces and wide containers, then move to smaller materials or narrower openings as control improves.
The motions connect with familiar tasks such as pouring cereal, measuring ingredients, or helping with food preparation. They also give the child time to practice coordination, concentration, and care for the work area.
Materials should fit the child’s age and readiness. Small items require appropriate adult supervision, especially for children who may put them in their mouths.
